Verona Pharma's strategy is to build a company recognised for the discovery of early stage intellectual property for new therapeutic drugs for the treatment of chronic respiratory and inflammatory diseases, and subsequent development to clinical proof of concept. As part of this strategy, the Company is constantly evaluating research opportunities with the potential to bring a new project into the Verona Pharma product pipeline.
The Company currently has three potential drug treatments under development aimed at the respiratory and inflammatory diseases markets. The Company's lead drug, RPL554 is a bronchodilator/anti-inflammatory drug, belonging to a class of drugs known as a mixed phosphodiesterase, or PDE, 3/4 inhibitor. Verona Pharma's other drug candidate is an anti-tussive drug that works to suppress the generation of a cough signal at the nerve endings in the lungs. The Company's longer term focus is based on anti-inflammatory polysaccharides (NAIPS) derived from certain marine organisms which the Company is planning to tailor through the use of synthetic and analytical chemical techniques.
