On 19 September 2006, Verona Pharma plc had its name changed from Isis Resources plc (Isis) after it had successfully acquired the entire issued share capital of Rhinopharma Limited (Rhinopharma). Isis was incorporated on 24 February 2005 in England and Wales, and admitted to trading on AIM on 23 March 2005.
Rhinopharma was established in Vancouver, Canada in April 2004 as a private drug discovery company focused on the discovery of new therapeutic drugs for the treatment of chronic respiratory and inflammatory diseases. The principal scientific founders of Rhinopharma were Professor Michael Walker, Emeritus Professor at the Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutics, University of British Columbia; Professor Clive Page, Professor of Pharmacology and Director of the Sackler Institute of Pulmonary Pharmacology, Kings College, University of London; and Professor David Saint, Professor at the School of Molecular and Biomedical Science, University of Adelaide.
The scientific founders of Rhinopharma, who continue to be involved in the Verona Pharma business, have considerable experience in the development and commercialisation of drugs. In particular, Professor Walker was the founder of the business that became Cardiome Pharma Corp., which is listed on the Toronto and NASDAQ stock exchanges and whose anti-arrhythmic drug (a disorder of heart beating) is currently the subject of a New Drug Application filed with the US Food and Drug Administration.
